Jags Lead Field After Opening Rounds At Lady Pirate Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The GRU Augusta women's golf team took control of the leaderboard early and never relinquished it by ending the first 36 holes at 12-over par in the 2014 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C. at the par-72, 6,008-yard Greenville Country Club.

Hosted by the East Carolina, the two-day 54-hole event began with 36-holes on Monday with 18 teams teeing off in a shotgun start. The field consisted of Appalachian State, No. 64 Elon, Gardner-Webb, No. 33 GRU Augusta, Georgia State, High Point, James Madison, No. 51 Kennesaw State, Longwood, Marshall, No. 44 Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Radford, Richmond, Western Kentucky, William & Mary and Winthrop.

The Jaguars ended the first day at the top of the leaderboard, while Kennesaw State is six strokes behind at 18 over for second place. Georgia State is third, Old Dominion fourth and East Caroina is fifth.

GRU sophomore Josefine Nyqvist is in first place after shooting a one-under 71 in round one and a round-two 73 - highlighted by five birdies in round one and two in the second. Nyqivist reached two-under par after her opening nine holes and after some bogeys, she birdied twice more on the back nine to get below par heading into round two. She answered her only bogey on the front nine, with a birdie to get back to even. She is tied with Jennifer Dilger for the top spot.

Jessica Haigwood finished just behind Nyqivst and is third all alone at two-over par. She posted a round-one 73 (+1), the second best score for GRU in the first round. She was tied for ninth heading into round two and birdied six and 18 to secure third place with a round-two 73. Teresa Caballer Hernani is sixth overall, after she improved her round-one 77 to a 71 in round two. She had three birdies on the back nine, including one on the par-five, 435-yard fifth hole to get two below par.

A first-hole bogey started Eunice Yi's day and despite two birdies on the front nine, she couldn't overcome three more bogeys on the back to end round one with a 76 (+4). A 75 (+3) in round two put Yi tied for 23rd overall.

Freshman Lexi Bollant (Buffalo, Minn.) earned a starting spot in the Jaguars lineup after she carded a 10th-place finish as an individual on Oct. 8 at the Wendy's Invitational. She shot a five-over 77 with two straight birdies on nine and 16. In her second trip out on the course, Bollant posted an 80 and is tied for 62nd as she awaits round three.

Senior Shannon Pak is competing as an individual for the Jaguars. Pak shot six-over par for her first 18 holes and shaved four strokes to shoot a 74 in round two. She is tied for 30th overall at eight-over par.

The Jaguars return tomorrow for the final day of play in the LPI with another shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tune in to LIVE SCORING.
