Jags Lose a Close One to Virginia State

Petersburgh, Va. – The Augusta University Women's Basketball team lost a non-conference contest to Virginia State this afternoon. Augusta falls to 2-5 on the year while Virginia State improves to 4-3.

Augusta was able to keep pace with their opponents for most of the game, being outscored by no more than five points in any given quarter. The Jags were only down six headed into halftime, but the squad couldn't make up any of the lost ground as The home team kept them at bay, outscoring them 36-28 in the second half.

Three Jags hit double figures in scoring for the game, as Crystal Corley led the squad with 14 points, while Zairya West and Kiera Howard each picked up 10 in the match-up. Corley shot 50% from the field, going six-for-12 while also knocking down a pair of free throws. Howard led the team in free throws made with four on five tries.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Jaguars were also led by Corley who swiped four steals in the game, and by Jaelyn Autman, who nabbed eight rebounds. Howard also picked up some defensive numbers with a pair of block in the affair.

As a team, Augusta went 22-for-56 (39.3%) from the field including three baskets from downtown on 13 tries. The squad went nine-for-20 in free throws and picked up 34 total rebounds with eight steals.

The Jaguars return home for their next contest when they take on the Paine College Lions at 5:30 p.m. on December 7th.
