Augusta, Ga. – The Augusta University Women’s basketball team defeated the Francis Marion Patriots today in a conference contest 74-69. The Jags move to 7-7 overall with a 4-2 mark in Peach Belt match ups. The Patriots drop to 5-7 and are now 1-5 in conference action.
With the win, the Jaguars match their best start in PBC play since the 2003-2004 team earned the same record en-route to a trip to the Elite Eight.
Augusta had a slow start to the game, as the Patriots opened things up with solid offense. The Jags found their rhythm as the quarter progressed though, as they took a 22-21 point lead into the break.
The second quarter saw the Jags offense thrived while the Patriots were stifled by a strong defensive stand from the home squad. The offense’s well balanced performance added some life to the crowd and pumped the entire team up. After outscoring their foe 14-7 in the second the Jags took a 36-28 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw both sides trade baskets early and often. The Patriots were able to outscore the Jags 14-12 to cut the lead down to six.
In the fourth quarter the Patriots outscore the Jaguars 20-14 to make for a nail-bitter of a finish. Augusta wasn’t able to hold off the offensive attack as Francis Marion force an overtime to determine the final.
The Jags jumped into the overtime with a new fire, outscoring the Patriots 12-7. Augusta looked in complete control of the flow as they played smart and effective defense and offense.
For the game Augusta was 27-of-59 (45.8%) from the field, knocking in six threes on 10 attempts, and picked up 14 free throws on 20 tries.
Kennedi Manning and Cameryn Wilson led the offense with 16 points each, while Harrison dropped in 15 points.
Wilson led the defense with four steals on the night, while Moneisha Goldsborough picked up a team high seven rebounds.
The Jags head to Pembroke, N.C. for their next contest against the UNC Pembroke Braves on January 18th at 1:30 p.m.
