Augusta Takes Down Young Harris 65-64 At Home

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball team hosted its third game in six days on Monday afternoon when the Young Harris Mountain Lions visited Christenberry Fieldhouse for a Peach Belt Conference contest. The Jaguars outlasted Young Harris to win 65-64 for their second win in the league.

Augusta senior Kaela Patrick led the team with 17 points, while junior Cameryn Wilson added 16 points. Both Patrick and Wilson each made three shots from the three-point line. Augusta senior Brianna Middleton nearly had her sixth double-double of the season and scored 12 points with nine rebounds.

 

Despite YHC shooting 50.9 percent from field-goal range to AU's 38.8 percent mark, the Jaguars won by getting to the free-throw line and attempting 10 more shots than the Mountain Lions.

 

The Jaguars trailed 6-0 to start the game, but Wilson hit a three pointer to cut the score in half. Young Harris held a 19-14 lead after the first period and held the advantage for the first five minutes of the game. Patrick hit back-to-back treys for AU and gave the Jags their first lead of the game at the 5:50 mark before halftime.

 

The score switched sides several times, with each team burying three pointers. Freshman Jayla Early tied it at 30-30 on another Augusta three pointer and Patrick hit her third of the half to keep the Jags slightly ahead. AU hit eight shots from beyond the arc in the first half to lead the Mountain Lions 40-37 at the midway point.

 

Wilson made her first two shots of the third period to lift Augusta to its largest lead of the game at the point. Heading into the final period, the Jags led 48-41. YHC never went away and climbed back into a one-basket game with 1:26 left in the contest. Augusta responded to every late shot from YHC and went on to win 65-64.

 

AU plays at Francis Marion on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. and at Georgia Southwestern on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 3:30 p.m. AU hosts USC Aiken on Wednesday, Jan. 30 for a 5:30 p.m. rivalry showdown in Christenberry.

 

The Jaguars welcome Lander University on Saturday, Feb. 2 for a Peach Belt Conference contest in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jags host 2019 Military Appreciation Day during the event, with soldiers from Fort Gordon joining the teams for the armed forces celebration. Various military groups will be in attendance and new recruits will be inducted during the men's halftime. The women tipoff at 12:00 p.m. and the men follow at 2:00 p.m.
