Jags Battle No. 20 North Georgia In 77-56 Loss

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball team hosted the No. 20 North Georgia Nighthawks on Saturday afternoon for a Peach Belt Conference game and fell 77-56 in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Augusta freshman Kiera Howard and junior Cameryn Wilson each had 11 points to lead the team, while freshman Jaelyn Autman scored 10 points for the Jaguars. Senior Brianna Middleton grabbed six rebounds and had eight points and freshman Asia Harrison contributed eight points for AU as well.

 

Ranked No. 20 in the nation, No. 2 in the NCAA Southeast Region, and Leading the Peach Belt standings, North Georgia trailed the Jags 7-3 to start the game and stayed behind 17-15 at the end of the first period.

 

The Jaguars shot 55.6 percent from field-goal territory in the first half and led 34-28 at halftime. AU put up 17 points in the first and second period to lead the Nighthawks. Harrison hit a three pointer and a jumper in back-to-back possessions under 30 seconds to give the Jags a six point lead at the pause.

 

To start the second half, Harrison hit another three pointer from the corner and Wilson kissed in a layup for a 39-32 Augusta advantage. The nationally-ranked Nighthawks didn't stay down for long and stole a 42-41 lead after a hot start to the second half.

 

Augusta allowed North Georgia to take control as they were outscored 31-11 in the third period. UNG owned the fourth period as well and went on to win 77-56. The game was decided in the paint as UNG outrebounded Augusra 47-17 and had 48 points in the paint to the Jags' 16.

 

AU hosts Young Harris this Monday, Jan. 21 for a 1:30 p.m. home game in Christenberry Fieldhouse. Augusta meets rival USC Aiken on Wednesday, Jan. 30 for a PBC rivalry showdown in Augusta, Ga., at 5:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
