Augusta Takes Down UNCP, 76-70, In Overtime Battle

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball team hosted the UNC Pembroke Braves for a Peach Belt Conference contest in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Wednesday night and won a 76-70 overtime battle.

 

Augusta is now 4-16 overall and 2-14 in the Peach Belt and UNCP moved to 7-13 on the season and 5-11 in the league. The victory snapped a 13 game losing streak for the Jaguars. In the first meeting of the season at UNCP in Pembroke, N.C., on Jan. 10, Augusta lost by a basket in a 61-59 close contest, but they avenged the defeat with the OT victory.

Senior Ashleigh Outler produced a team best 20 points for AU, while adding six assists and four rebounds. Seniors Jahmia Bradley and Joshlyn Belcher each had 14 points, junior Moneisha Goldsborough delivered 11, and junior Brianna Middleton managed 10 in the win.

 

UNCP grabbed 10 more rebounds that the Jaguars, but Augusta hit eight more treys than the Braves in the win.

 

Sporting their pink alternate jerseys for cancer awareness and for the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University, the Jaguars were ahead 15-12 at the conclusion of the first period and led by nine in the second. The Braves brought it back and sunk a one-handed floater with two seconds on the clock to steal a 27-26 halftime score.

 

Bradley hit a trio of three pointers in the first three minutes of the third period and AU led 40-35 with 6:30 on the clock. The Jaguars trailed by four to begin the final period and were in a one-point game at the five-minute mark.

 

The Jags got their fourth three pointer from Bradley with under a minute in the game to tie it at 63-all. UNCP held the ball until the six-second mark and Aliyah Farmer kissed in a layup to steal a 65-63 advantage. Outler hit a spin-move layup for Augusta in the lane to force overtime.

 

Tied at 65-65 to start OT, the game was back-and-forth to the wire. Outler sunk two huge three pointers for the Jags and AU held a 71-68 lead down to 23 seconds left, when Belcher hit a free throw to make it 72-68. The Jags snapped a 13-game losing streak and won by six points.

 

Augusta hosts the Georgia College Bobcats for 2018 Homecoming this Saturday, Feb. 10 in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The women's game tips off at 1:30 p.m. and the men follow at 3:30 p.m.
