Belcher Reaches 200 Career Three Pointers In 91-81 Loss To North Georgia

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball team hosted its second Peach Belt Conference game in three days when they welcomed the North Georgia Nighthawks on Tuesday afternoon. The Jaguars diminished a 22-point deficit, but fell 91-81 in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

 

Augusta moved to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the PBC, while North Georgia went to 7-2, 2-1 Peach Belt.

 

Leading the league in three pointers and ranked sixth in points, senior Joshlyn Belcher hit a three with 1:02 on the clock in the first quarter to reach 200 made three pointers in a Jaguar uniform. Belcher finished the day with 21 points, four steals, and two rebounds.

 

Senior Cynara Pitt had the third best field-goal percentage in the PBC entering the matchup and she posted 10 points with six boards, while junior Brianna Middleton had 15 points and 15 rebounds.

 

AU shot 39.1 percent from the floor, 56.3 from the three-point line (9-for-16), and 18-for-23 from the free-throw line (78.3 percent). UNG shot 50 from the floor, but only had 17 turnovers to AU's 20. Augusta outrebounded North Georgia 42-40, but the slow start was too much to overcome.

 

UNG went on a 10-0 run to start the game, but the Jags cut it to a single-digit lead and trailed 20-14 after the first quarter of 10 minutes. The halftime score was 40-29 to the Nighthawks and they led by as much as 22 to open up the second half.

 

Augusta got the deficit back to 10 points and three pointers from Belcher and Autumn Woodard made the score 86-81 with 43 seconds remaining. The Nighthawks survived the Augusta rally and won the game at the free-throw line.

 

The Jaguars head to Morrow, Ga., on Dec. 30 to take on the Clayton State Lakers for a 1:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference game.
