Augusta Beats Benedict 61-51 For First Win Of 2017-18 Season

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Augusta University women's basketball team opened with a 10-0 run on Tuesday night at Benedict College and won a 61-51 non-conference game. The Jaguars captured their second game of the season and the first under new head coach Millette Green.

 

Starting the season with two road games, the Jaguars are now 1-1 on the year and return home to Christenberry Fieldhouse on Nov. 29. Benedict moved to 0-4 with the 10-point loss. Augusta only used seven players in the game on Tuesday night and had four score in double digits.

 

Augusta senior-transfer Jahmia Bradley led all scorers with 16 points and she added two rebounds with a steal and an assist. Junior Brianna Middleton had 13 points, seven boards, and four steals, senior Joshlyn Belcher posted 12 points and five rebounds, and senior Cynara Pitt recorded 10 bench points and six boards.

 

The Jaguars' field-goal percentage was 42.3 percent (22-of-52) to Benedict's 35 percent (21-of-60) and Augusta was 14-of-22 at the free-throw line (63.6 percent), with Benedict shooting 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) at the charity stripe.

 

Benedict had 12 more rebounds than AU, but the Jags outscored the Tigers 17-12 off turnovers and never gave up the lead the entire contest.

 

The Jaguars host their first game of the 2017-18 season on Wednesday, Nov. 29 when Livingstone College comes to Christenberry Fieldhouse for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference single game.
