Jags Fall To GSW, 64-52, On Military Appreciation Day

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball team hosted the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon in Christenberry Fieldhouse for Military Appreciation Day and the Jaguars dropped a 64-52 Peach Belt Conference contest.

 

Georgia Southwestern (5-10, 2-9 PBC) snapped a nine game losing streak with the victory and handed Augusta (3-12, 1-10 PBC) its ninth straight loss. Each team struggled shooting from the floor with the Jags posting a 34.5 field-goal percentage to GSW's 37.5 percent.

 

The Hurricanes hit one more three pointer than Augusta with four in the game and they got to the free-throw line seven more times than the Jaguars. AU owned the rebound battle 44-40, but were outscored 22-10 in the pain.

 

Jags junior Brianna Middleton had nine points and four rebounds at halftime and she ended with 13 points and seven boards. Senior Jahmia Bradley had 12 points on the day, while senior Cynara Piitt grabbed 12 rebounds and scored eight points for Augusta.

 

The first basket went to Augusta and they held the lead until the 4:40 mark in the first period, when GSW knocked down a corner three pointer. Bradley answered with an AU three pointer as the score danced back and forth. The first period saw GSW lead 17-11 and they blew it open in the second period 25-11 to lead by eight at the half.  The first 20 minutes of action had seven lead changes.

 

Georgia Southwestern strengthened its lead by 20 points towards the end of the third period and they went on to win 64-52.

 

AU travels to Aiken, S.C., to take on rival USC Aiken on Wednesday, Jan. 24 for a 5:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference game.
