Augusta Battles Francis Marion In 72-64 PBC Loss

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball team hosted the Francis Marion Patriots on Wednesday night for the cancer awareness games and dropped a 72-64 Peach Belt Conference East Division matchup

 
 

The Jaguars (12-10, 7-10 PBC) honored cancer survivors, handed our information, and collected donations for the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University. Women's hoops rocked their new pink uniforms to support the cause and bring awareness to combating cancer.

 

Senior Kayla Lovett scored 12 points to lead the Jags and junior Joshlyn Belcher scored 11 off the bench for the Jags. Senior Tavia Sykes tallied 11 as well and junior Abrea Harris put up 10 in the defeat. 

 

Khai Chandler had 22 for FMU (13-11, 8-7 PBC) and Shaunice Fulmer 19 in the win.

 

AU shot 44.8 percent (26-for-58) from the floor and held FMU to 44.1 shooting (30-for-68). The Jags made two more treys than the Patriots, but they were outperformed 36-12 in the paint. FMU forced the Jags into 16 turnovers and only committed 12.

 

AU led 19-11 after one period of play, with JJ Williams and Tavia Sykes scoring a quick five points each. They stayed up by nine in the start of the second, but the Patriots tied it 22-all on Khai Chandler's layup.

 

The Jaguars jumped ahead and took the half 39-33. They led for entire second half until 7:20 to go in the fourth when Chandler canner another jumper for a 58-57 score. The game was tied 63-all with 3:30 to play in the game.

 

Francis Marion outscored AU 9-1 down the stretch as the Jags were forced to foul to slow the clock.

 

The Jaguars host the Armstrong State Pirates on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a 1:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference tipoff. The men are scheduled to play at 3:30 p.m. The Hull College of Business from Augusta University will be in attendance to support the Jags!
