No. 23 Clayton State Outlasts Jaguars, 79-63

MORROW, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball lost a 79-63 Peach Belt Conference game on Monday night at Clayton State University in Morrow, Ga.

 

Augusta (6-6, 1-5 PBC) played its fourth game in eight days at Clayton State (10-3, 2-2 PBC) - ranked No. 23 in the nation.

 

CSU shot 45.9 percent to Augusta's 39.3 percent from the floor. Each team only made two threes on the night, but the Lakers outrebounded Augusta 48-39.

 

Junior Abrea Harris came off the Augusta bench to lead the team with 17 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Senior Breonna O'Conner tallied 16 points, with six boards and two assists, and junior Cynara Pitt posted nine points with six rebounds in the defeat.

 

Clayton State's Tierra Johnson scored 26 points to best all scorers and Andrea Benford notched 17 off the bench. CSU outscored Augusta 52-32 in the paint to help will them to the win.

 

The Lakers took a 6-2 lead to open the game, but Augusta quickly stole it back 10-8 on O'Conner's first basket of the night. The lead stayed to the Jags for the remainder of the first period and Lovett found Harris for a layup with six seconds left to make it 17-14.

 

Clayton State's Tierra Johnson made her third basket with 5:41 left in the first half to give the advantage back to the Lakers, but Harris reached double figures with a layup off an assist from Mallory Myers. Myers' free throw made it 32-30 with 52 seconds until halftime. After making two buckets, CSU fouled Harris with one second left and she made a free throw to take a 34-33 lead in favor of the Jags.

 

Harris went 5-for-11 in the opening half for Augusta to total 13 early points. CSU came out the break and outshot the Jaguars to take a 79.63 final.

 

The Jags meet in Milledgeville, Ga., with the Georgia College Bobcats for a 1:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference game on Saturday, Jan. 14 in the Centennial Center.
