CARROLLTON, Ga. – Getting their first taste of the road in the 2016-17 season, the Augusta University women's basketball team traveled to play the West Georgia Wolves on Saturday afternoon and dropped their first game of the season 76-71 after trailing by 21 points.
Augusta (3-1) was down 42-24 at the half to West Georgia (1-3), but shot 65 percent in the fourth period to give themselves a chance.
Jags junior Ashleigh Outler hit six three pointers last time out and she picked it back up going 2-for-2 in the opening half. Outler hit three for the game and totaled 21 points to lead all scorers. Senior Breonna O'Conner chipped in 16 points, five rebounds, and three assists and senior Kayla Lovett went 5-for-9 shooting and tallied 11 points, four assists, and three boards.
For the game, Augusta posted a 46.0 field-goal percentage (29-for-63), while the Wolves shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52). Each team made five three pointers, but the free-throw line made the difference. West Georgia hit 25-of-35 (71 percent) at the stripe, while Augusta was 8-for-14 (57 percent).
UWG grabbed 42 rebounds to the Jaguars' 27, but Augusta had 28 points in the paint and scored 20 points off turnovers.
The Wolves went on a 12-0 run to start the game and set the pace for the first half. Jaguar sophomore Mallory Myers stole a pass at the 5:22 mark in the first period and found O'Conner for the team's first bucket of the game.
UWG shot 59.3 percent as a team from field-goal range in the first half, as the Jags struggled shooting 34.6 percent. Augusta found themselves in their largest deficit of the young season and trailed 42-24 at the half.
The second half was a different game as the Jags outscored the Wolves 47-34 in the last two periods. First-half woes were too much overcome and Augusta's comeback was spoiled by UWG.
The Wolves were led by A'Kia Harris' 21 points, while De'Asia Jones added 18 rebounds and 16 points. UWG had four score in double figures.
The Jaguars host Benedict College on Saturday, Dec. 10 for a 4:00 p.m. single non-conference game in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
