AUGUSTA, Ga. – Coming off an incredible post-season run that saw them advance to the NCAA Region Championship, the Augusta University women's basketball team was chosen to finish third of 14 teams in the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches poll. The PBC released the poll on Thursday from their offices in Augusta.
Lander was named first and captured seven first-place votes and 152 total points, edging out second-place Francis Marion by three. Augusta University was third with Columbus State fourth and Clayton State fifth. North Georgia, Armstrong State, Georgia College, Young Harris, USC Aiken, Flagler, UNC Pembroke, Georgia Southwestern and Montevallo rounded out the voting.
"I don't look at this poll as a preseason poll, but as a final postseason poll from last year," Head Coach Nate Teymer said. "It's an honor to be recognized. We have some new pieces added this year and we still have a ways to go to be the team we need to be this season."
Teymer picked up his second PBC Coach of the Year honor for the 2015-16 season after he guided his squad to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Augusta made their fourth NCAA appearance last season.
The Jaguars finished second in the PBC east division last season, just one game behind Lander with a 14-5 league mark, 24-9 overall. For 2016-17, Augusta returns an experienced team with three seniors and six juniors. Junior Breonna O'Conner was named second-team All-Conference last season and preseason All-Conference this week. In all, the Jags return four of their top six scorers.
The women's coaches poll is below. Teams were awarded 13 points for a first-place vote, 12 for a second and so on. Coaches were not permitted to rank their own teams.
