Lady Braves Nip ASU

PEMBROKE, N.C. – UNC Pembroke survived Augusta State's best long-distance shooting night of the season on Wednesday, escaping with a 58-57 Peach Belt Conference victory over the Lady Jaguars in the English E. Jones Center.

With the loss, ASU slipped back to 11-11 on the season and 6-8 in the PBC. The Lady Braves, who entered the contest with a 1.5-game lead on ASU for third place in the PBC East Division, improved to 11-10 and 8-5, respectively.

Sophomore guard/forward Becky Newhouse paced ASU with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Sophomore forward J Ashby notched 13 points and senior guard Amber Peterson hit on 4-of-5 attempts from long distance for 12 points. Junior forward Laci Schreiber pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

UNCP's Jazmine Kemp booked a game-high 18 points and added seven boards. Amelia Partin netted 12 points off the bench and DeDe Cotton chipped in 11, including three treys.

Newhouse drained a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in the game to pull the Lady Jags within 58-57. After three timeouts, ASU fouled Kemp, who promptly missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Lady Jags rebounded the missed attempt, only to turn the ball over with four seconds left.

ASU matched its season high with nine 3-pointers and set a new season high in three-point field goal percentage (.450). The Lady Jags owned the glass as well, outrebounding UNCP 38-25.
