No. 3 Clayton State Stops Lady Jags

MORROW, Ga. -- Defending national champion Clayton State scored the first eight points of the game Saturday and never looked back en route to an 85-47 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta State in the Athletics & Fitness Center.

The loss was the fourth straight in conference play for the Lady Jaguars, dropping them to 7-7 on the season and 2-4 in the PBC. The Lakers, ranked third in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll, improved to 16-1 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the league.

Not a single player reached double figures for ASU, which suffered 25 turnovers and hit just 1-of-9 3-point attempts. The Lady Jags were led by junior guard Brittany White's nine points. Junior forward Laci Schreiber added eight points, while J Ashby, Brooke McCants and Marina Fox notched six points each. Sophomore guard Becky Newhouse turned in a team-high four rebounds.

Brittany Hall posted a game-high 13 points and four steals for CSU, which got 12 points from both Tanisha Woodard and Drameka Griggs. Kayla Mobley chipped in 11 points, a game-high six rebounds and three steals.

The Lakers, who led 44-18 at the half, shot 50.8 percent from the field and connected on eight 3-pointers.

ASU shot 50 percent in the second half (12-of-24) and connected on 8-of-9 free throws (88.9 percent).

The contest marked the first leg of a three-game road swing. The Lady Jags travel to USC Aiken on Monday, Jan. 16 and head to Milledgeville on Wednesday, Jan. 18 to face Georgia College. Both games are slated for a 5:30 p.m., tipoff.
