Lady Bearcats Rush Past ASU

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State shot 44 percent from the floor Wednesday night, but the Lady Jaguars just couldn't keep up with a lethal Lander attack as they fell 75-60 in Peach Belt Conference action at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The loss dropped the Lady Jaguars to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the PBC. Lander improved to 10-3 and remained perfect in the conference at 5-0.

Both teams came out scorching the nets, trading buckets at will in the first four minutes of the ballgame. Brittany White drained a 15-footer from the right side off an ASU miss, then swished a 3-pointer to take an early 7-6 lead. But the Lady Bearcats kept piling on the pressure, building a 22-12 lead with 11:24 to go in the first half.

ASU fought back, grinding the lead down to three with back-to-back buckets in the paint by Laci Schreiber on crisp ball movement, but could get no closer as Lander finally pulled away.

Sophomore forward Jemimah Ashby led the way for ASU with 14 points and six rebounds. White knocked down two treys to chip in 13 points, and Schreiber added 10 in the paint.

Brittni Johnson made 5-of-6 three-pointers and led all scorers with 20 points for Lander, while Ciara Lyons tacked on 17 for the Lady Bearcats, who were playing without Jasmine Judge and Muria Myrick.

Lander enjoyed a strong offensive showing all night, shooting 51.7 percent from the floor on 29-of-57 shooting, including 7-of-11 from behind the arc. ASU shot 40.6 percent on an 26-of-64 effort, but only 1-of-10 from 3-point range in the second half.

ASU heads to third-ranked Clayton State on Saturday, January 14 to start a three-game road swing. The Lady Jags travel to USC Aiken on Monday, Jan. 16 and head to Milledgeville on Wednesday, Jan. 18 to face Georgia College.
