ETTRICK, Va. -- Augusta State shot just 32 percent from the field Saturday afternoon and dropped a 44-41 non-conference matchup at Virginia State on the second day of the VSU Chick-Fil-A Classic in Daniel Gym.
The Lady Jags, who were led by sophomore guard Becky Newhouse's nine points, dropped to 1-3 on the young season. Mariame Sylla posted a game-high 16 points for VSU and LaMesha Deal chipped in 14 points.
ASU trailed only 21-16 at the half despite going the opening 20 minutes without a 3-pointer. Newhouse connected on three in the second half and Brittany White added one trey. The Lady Jags suffered 24 turnovers and were edged out on the boards, 41-36.
The Lady Jags travel to Atlanta to take on Clark-Atlanta in a non-conference contest on Wednesday Nov. 30 at 6:00 p.m.
