Lady Jags Fall To West Georgia

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Led by junior guard Mone Peoples' game-high 19 points, West Georgia held off Augusta State for 59-56 non-conference victory Tuesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse after Lady Jaguar senior guard Amber Peterson's last-second 3-point attempt clanged off the right iron.

ASU (1-1) came out hot to start the game, building the lead to 10 on a layup by sophomore guard Jemimah Ashby with 10:53 left in the first half. But the Wolves embarked on a 7-0 run capped by Krystal Delph to all but erase the margin a few minutes later.

West Georgia (2-1) pulled within one on Peoples' trey with 5:58 to go; she followed that with a steal and easy layup to finally put West Georgia up, and it was a lead they would never relinquish as the Lady Jags couldn't overcome their offensive troubles.

The Lady Jags were led by Ashby who netted a career-high 16 points and six rebounds, and junior forward Laci Schreiber's game-high 11 rebounds. Junior guard Brittany White notched nine points, six assists, and three steals.

"The turnovers really hurt our momentum and we shot ourselves in the foot some," ASU head coach Nathan Teymer said. "This was one of those games that we all needed to do better, including the coach."

West Georgia had two other players book double-digit points along with Peoples: Senior guard Krystal Delph notched 11 points and five rebounds, while Shunice Hardy scored 10 points and snagged three steals.

The Lady Jags posted a rebounding advantage of 38-30, but the Wolves piled up 12 steals. ASU suffered 26 turnovers and shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the floor. UWG shot 40 percent, but made five 3-pointers, including four in the first half.

ASU departs on Thanksgiving afternoon for the VSU Chick-Fil-A Classic, hosted by Virginia State University in Ettrick, Va. The Lady Jags take on Elizabeth City State on Friday, Nov. 25 at 5:00 p.m., and face Virginia State on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 4:00 p.m.
