Jaguars Beat UNCP, 8-0, To Split Conference Twin Bill

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team hosted a Peach Belt Conference twin bill on Saturday against UNC Pembroke and recovered from a 4-2 loss to win 8-0 in game two at Jaguar Field.

 

 

Augusta (9-35, 3-15 PBC) and UNC Pembroke (22-24, 7-11 PBC) endured a rain delay and got in the conference games. The Jaguars are scheduled to play Claflin on Tuesday, April 23 for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader in Orangeburg, S.C.

 

GAME 1

Game one was a pitcher's duel that had no score through three and a half innings, but Augusta broke it open when senor Lydia Hausman drove in Meredith McLendon for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Augusta scored another in the fifth on an infield error, but the Braves blasted a game-tying, two-run homer in the sixth to make it 2-2. UNCP scored two more and held on for a 4-2 final.

 

Augusta outhit the Braves 10-8 in the game, with sophomore Regan Norfleet going 2-for-3 with a run. Senior Savannah Gabriel and freshman Olivia Biles were each 2-for-3 and AU freshman Lauren Prescott was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

 

Jags junior Morgan Hunter (3-18) pitched a complete game and struck out two, while giving up four runs on eight hits.

 

GAME 2

After scoring one run in the third to take a 1-0 lead, Augusta blew it open with seven runs in the fourth inning and run ruled UNCP 8-0.

 

Augusta freshman Katy Caldwell (4-20) held UNCP scoreless in five innings of work and struck out two on the mound.

 

Augusta freshman Olivia Biles and senior Savannah Gabriel were each 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run for Augusta, while sophomore Bella Fernandez added two hits and a run. Senior Lydia Hausman picked up two RBI on one hit and junior Meredith McLendon enjoyed a 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
