Augusta Sweeps Claflin In Final Road Series Of Season

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Augusta University softball team took its final road trip of the 2019 season on Tuesday and swept the Claflin Panthers 8-0 and 4-0 in the non-conference doubleheader.

 

Augusta hosts Georgia College on Saturday, April 27 for a 1:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Jaguar Field. The Jaguars will recognize seniors Savannah Gabriel, Lydia Hausman, Kelsea Hunter, and Alyssa Johnson on the field prior to first pitch.

 

GAME 1

The Jaguars run-ruled the Panthers in game one and won 8-0 in five innings. It was the second consecutive game that AU won 8-0 in five innings, after beating UNC Pembroke on April 20 by the same score.

 

AU put up two runs in the first inning when junior Meredith McLendon scored senior Savannah Gabriel on a single and freshman Lauren Prescott doubled to bring home McLendon. In their second at bat, the Jaguars drove in five more runs and went on to win early.

 

Jaguar freshman Katy Caldwell (5-10) logged her 15th start of the season and pitched five innings. Caldwell held Claflin to just two hits and no runs, while striking out three.

 

Prescott was 3-for-3 with three RBI for the Jags, while McLendon went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, and Gabriel 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and runs.

 

GAME 2

Augusta did all its damage in the top of the third inning of game two and scored four runs to take the first lead. Augusta junior Morgan Hunter (4-18) held Claflin scoreless and struck out six to seal the 4-0 win for the Jaguars.

 

Senior Kelsea Hunter had a 2-for-4 outing with one run, McLendon added two more hits for Augusta with a run and RBI, and sophomore Bella Fernandez enjoyed a 2-for-3 day with an RBI. AU outhit CU 8-4 in the victory.
