Augusta Celebrates Senior Day, Wraps Season Against Georgia College

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team hosted a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with the Georgia College Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field. The Jaguars dropped a back-and-forth first game 8-5 and fell 2-1 in a game-two thriller.

 

Augusta finishes the season 11-37 overall and 3-16 in the Peach Belt, while Georgia College moved to 34-17 overall and 11-8 in the league.

 

GAME 1

Ranked in the NCAA Southeast Region, Georgia College stole the first lead with a run in the first inning, but a double from AU freshman Lauren Prescott gave the Jags a 2-1 advantage in their first at bat. A sacrifice fly from GC in the second inning tied the game at 2-2, until Augusta senior Savannah Gabriel drove in senior Lydia Hausman on an RBI groundball.

 

The Bobcats brought in two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to hold on and win 8-5, behind a few AU errors in the last inning. Freshman Katy Caldwell (5-11) made her 16th start of the year and pitched 5.1 innings to allow seven hits for four runs.

 

Prescott was 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Jags, while Gabriel and senior Kelsea Hunter were each 1-for-4 with a run. AU sophomore Megan McCook was 1-for-1 with two walks.

 

GAME 2

Each team scored a single run in their first at bat of the game and carried a 1-1 tie game into the seventh inning. GC scratched across a run in their final scheduled at bat for a one-run lead.

 

Augusta put two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. After two outs were made in the inning, sophomore Bella Fernandez singled to centerfield with a runner on second, but the Bobcats caught the runner at home to win 2-1.

 

Junior Morgan Hunter (4-19) started her 23rd game and struck out three in a complete-game performance. Gabriel, Fernandez, and freshman Olivia Biles were all 2-for-3 for the Jaguars. AU outhit GC 6-5 in the game.
