Erskine Escapes Augusta In Close Non-Conference Meetings

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Augusta University softball team outhit the Erskine Flying Fleet in game one on Wednesday and matched three hits to the Fleet in game two, but fell 4-0 and 1-0 in non-conference action.

 

Augusta (8-33) and Erskine (32-12) finally met this season after inclement weather forced two rescheduled dates.

 

Next up, the Jaguars host the UNC Pembroke Braves on Friday, April 19 for a 2:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.

 

GAME 1

Augusta outhit Erskine 6-5 in game one, but left 12 runners on base and allowed all the scoring in one at bat. The Fleet took a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. Erskine hit an RBI-double to score the first run, before a runner from third stole home. A two-run homer lifted the Fleet up by four and they held Augusta scoreless to take the first outing.

 

Jaguar junior Meredith McLendon went 2-for-4 and sophomore Megan McCook was 1-for-1 for AU with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Senior Kelsea Hunter and freshman Olivia Biles each went 1-for-3, while freshman CiCi Castillo turned in one hit for Augusta as well.

 

On the mound, Augusta junior Morgan Hunter (3-17) started her 20th game of the season and struck out five in six innings of work.

 

GAME 2

The second contest of the day was scoreless until the Fleet hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and survived for the 1-0 victory. Each team matched three hits in the game.

 

AU freshman Katy Caldwell (3-10) pitched her 18th game of the season and made her 13th start. Caldwell held Erskine to three hits for run and had one strikeout with no walks.

 

McCook added hit for Augusta, while sophomores Bella Fernandez and Regan Norfleet each added a hit.
