Augusta Splits Doubleheader At Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team took on the Emmanuel College Lions for a non-conference doubleheader and fell 5-4, before winning 7-5 on Friday afternoon.

 

Augusta is now 7-31 overall after the twin bill, while Emmanuel is mow 19-24. The Jaguars rearranged its weekend series against Lander and will play the Bearcats on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. in Greenwood, S.C.

 

GAME 1

The Jaguars outperformed Emmanuel in terms of hits and errors, but they couldn't keep a last-inning rally intact and lost a close 5-4 contest. Augusta outhit the Lions 9-8 and had no errors, while EC committed one.

 

After allowing a pair in the second inning, Augusta recovered in the top of the fifth when sophomore Bella Fernandez and senior Lydia Hausman smacked RBI singles to score senior Kelsea Hunter and freshman Lauren Prescott. Emmanuel responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.

 

In their scheduled at bat, the Jaguars made noise when K. Hunter started the inning with a single to right field. Two batters later, Jaguar junior Meredith McLendon delivered with a two-run home run to get Augusta into a one run game. Freshman Lauren Prescott kept the fun going with a single in the next at bat, but the Lions made a pitching change and got back-to-back outs to end the game.

 

AU junior pitcher Jada Jackson (0-1) struck out two and allowed eight hits for five runs in six innings of work. McLendon went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, K. Hunter scored twice and added two hits, and freshman Olivia Biles booked two hits.

 

Prescott had a hit and scored, while adding two walks and Fernandez and Hausman each had an RBI and one hit for the Jags.

 

GAME 2

Augusta carried over its late offensive push from game one and took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two. The Lions tied the game with two in the first and one in the second, but AU carded four in the fourth inning and went on to win 7-5 behind 10 hits. Emmanuel committed five errors in the game and Augusta capitalized to split the non-conference meetings.

 

Biles and Fernandez were each 2-for-4 with a scored run for the Jaguars, with Fernandez also adding and RBI. Sophomore Regan Norfleet was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run for Augusta and Prescott scored twice with a hit.

 

Augusta junior Courtney Browne (2-4) pitched four innings and held EC to five runs on eight hits, before junior Morgan Hunter came in to strike out three in the final three innings of action.
