Newberry Knocks Out Jags In Doubleheader Sweep

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team dropped an 8-1 non-conference game to Newberry College, before falling 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Jaguar Field.

 

Augusta is now 1-11 and Newberry moved to 17-3 with the wins.

 

The Jaguars play at Lenoir-Rhyne this Saturday, March 9 for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.

 

GAME 1

The Wolves struck first with a 6-0 early lead. Newberry notched a run with a single in the first inning and carded two on a single and three on a home run in the second inning. Augusta senior Savannah Gabriel drove in the Jaguars' first run with a fifth-inning double to plate freshman Olivia Biles, but the Wolves withstood the late push and won 8-1.

 

Biles went 2-for-3 with a run to lead the Jaguars, while Gabriel and junior Meredith McLendon each added one hit. AU freshman Katy Caldwell (0-3) pitched a complete game and struck out two, while surrendering eight runs on 12 hits.

 

GAME 2

Augusta found life early, when McLendon blasted a two-run homer in the first at bat. The scored stayed 2-0, until Newberry scored five in the fifth and went on to win 5-2.

 

Freshman Lauren Prescott went 2-for-4 for Augusta, while McLendon picked up two RBI on a hit. Freshmen Madelyn Libby and CiCi Castillo each had a hit for Augusta as well.

 

Augusta junior Morgan Hunter (1-5) pitched a complete game and struck out four, while giving up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits.
