AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team played the Anderson Trojans for a midweek non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field. Augusta won 9-3 in game one and fell 11-7 in the second meeting.

GAME 1

Highlighted by three home runs, the Jaguars blew open game one of the series in the later innings and won 9-3 on 12 hits. Augusta started strong with Morgan Hunter throwing three strikeouts in the first two innings to keep Anderson off the board. AU's Lauren Prescott started off the bottom of the second with a triple to right center field and was eventually brought home thanks to a Lydia Hausman sac fly to take the lead.

Three quick outs in the top of the third assured that the Jags maintained the lead. Anderson managed to get one on the board after a sac fly to center field, but were halted by Augusta with bases loaded. A Cici Castillo homerun in the bottom of the fourth allowed the Jags to regain the lead until Anderson picked up their second run in the fifth to tie the game 2-2.

Another homer, courtesy of Meredith McLendon, added two more for Augusta to take the lead 4-2. Augusta went on a tear in the sixth, posting five runs. Olivia Biles secured AU's third homerun in the process. In the seventh, bases were loaded for Anderson, but an acrobatic diving catch by Prescott kept the Trojans to one run. Hunter wrapped up the game with her fourth strikeout of the game to pick up the Jaguars first win of the new season. The final score was 9-3.

GAME 2

Game two began with Anderson taking an early 3-0 lead on the back of a homerun in the first inning. Augusta responded by putting up four hits to score five in the bottom of the first.

Anderson picked up a fourth run in the next inning after a triple to deep center field and scored again after a home run in the third to tie the game 5-5.

Anderson kept up the pressure by putting three more on the board in the fourth. With bases loaded, the Jags turned a double play when Biles fielded a groundball and threw home to Castillo who flipped it to Fernandez at first to end the inning. A double in the fourth by McLendon brought home Madelyn Libby and Savannah Gabriel to claw the score back 7-8. Augusta just fell short, however, with Anderson extending their lead to 11-7 in the seventh on back to back doubles. The score would hold there until the end as Augusta and Anderson split the series.

Augusta returns to Jaguar Field on Sunday, Feb. 10 for a dual meeting with the Wingate Bulldogs beginning at 1:00 p.m.
