Augusta Drops Two To Catawba In Season Opener

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team competed in its first games of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field and fell 2-1 and 5-2 against the visiting Catawba Indians.

 

GAME 1

Game one was a close battle down to the final out. Augusta scored first when freshman Madelyn Libby lined a double to score senior Savannah Gabriel in the third inning. Catawba clawed back and scored a pair in the fourth to go on and win 2-1.

 

Junior Morgan Hunter made Augusta's first pitching start of the season and went all seven innings. Hunter struck out two and gave up three hits for two runs (one earned).

 

Libby and freshman CiCi Castillo each had one hit to account for AU's total in the game.

 

GAME 2

Augusta took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Catawba had a three-run second inning and survived the Jaguars for a 5-2 win.

 

Augusta's Meredith McLendon was 2-for-4, while Castillo and freshman Olivia Biles each had one hit.

 

Augusta senior Alyssa Johnson pitched four innings in her first start of the season and gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Junior Jada Jackson entered the game and tossed three innings for the Jaguars.

 

Augusta returns to Jaguar Field to host Anderson on Saturday, Feb. 9 for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
