Young Harris Hits Past Jags In Conference Doubleheader

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team played a Peach Belt Conference double feature at Young Harris College on Saturday and dropped game one 6-0, before falling 8-1 in game two.

 

The Jaguars stay in the mountains and play against the North Georgia Nighthawks in Dahlonega, Ga., on Sunday, March 31.

 

GAME 1

The Jaguars (3-25, 0-8 PBC) got two outs in the first inning, but YHC drove in one with a single to get an early 1-0 lead. The Mountain Lions drove in three more on a sacrifice fly and two-RBU single to lead 4-0 after the third inning and went on to win 6-0.

 

Augusta freshman Lauren Prescott and junior Meredith McLendon each went 2-for-3, while  

 

AU junior Morgan Hunter (1-6) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed 11 hits for six runs, before junior Jada Jackson faced four batters to close the game.

 

GAME 2

Jaguar freshman Katy Caldwell (1-8) made the game-two start on the mound and held the Mountain Lions scoreless until the third inning. Young Harris hit a three-run homer to take a lead in the third inning and never lost the lead.

 

Caldwell pitched 2.1 innings and gave up seven hits for three runs. AU junior Jada Jackson tossed 2.2 innings, surrendering eight hits for five runs, but only three were earned. Jackson struck out two, before junior Courtney Browne pitched the final inning and recorded a strikeout, as she held the Mountain Lions to one hit.

 

Sophomore Bella Fernandez slapped an RBI single into left field to get Augusta on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, but YHC was too much and outhit the Jaguars 16-5. Prescott added two more hits for Augusta and drew a walk to lead the offense, while freshman Olivia Biles and Fernandez each had one hit as well.
