AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team hosted the Wingate Bulldogs in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader. Wingate took game one 11-1 and game two 10-2 in non-conference play.

The Jaguars hit the road for the first time in 2019 when they play at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., on Wednesday, Feb. 13 for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.

GAME 1

Wingate took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one, after a deep hit to left field with the bases loaded. WU added two more to end the inning up 4-0. Augusta was unable to respond and a homerun from the Bulldogs in the top of the fourth saw Wingate extend its lead by four more runs.

The bottom of the second started promising with a single by AU's Lauren Prescott, but a double play by Wingate kept Augusta off the board. The Jags were able to keep the Bulldogs scoreless in the third thanks to a diving catch by Addison Renfroe in deep right field, but a two-run homer by Wingate in the fourth added two more.

Freshman Katy Caldwell received the call to the mound to pitch in her first collegiate game for Augusta. Caldwell recorded her first career strikeout to wrap up the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Madelyn Libby blasted one out of the park to put Augusta on the board, but the Bulldogs went on to win 11-1.

Megan McCook, Madelyn Libby, and Meredith McLendon accounted for Augusta's three hits.

GAME 2

The second meeting started with a two-run homer from Wingate, but two strikeouts from Courtney Brown closed out the top of the first. In the top of the second, Renfroe made a catch in full stride in deep center field to keep the score close.

The Jags unfortunately were unable to earn any runs in the first two innings and Wingate scored another with a double. The Jaguars were able to rally with Renfroe fielding it deep and launching the ball to catcher Cici Castillo at home who flipped it to Olivia Biles to get the runner out at third. Wingate unloaded at the plate and a home run in the fourth saw Wingate continue to build their lead to 9-0. In the bottom of the fourth, a double by McLendon put the Jags in scoring position with runners on second and third. A sac fly by Castillo brought home Libby to put the Jaguars on the board 9-1. A double down the left-field line by Lydia Hausman brought home McLendon, ending the inning with a 9-2 AU deficit.

Wingate managed to add one more, but Freshman Lindsey Lee, who recorded her first appearance on the mound for the Jaguars, dealt two strikeouts with bases loaded to close the inning. The Jaguars were unable to make a final inning push as the game went to Wingate 10-2.
