Augusta Falls To Flagler In First Conference Home Games

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team hosted the Flagler Saints for its first Peach Belt Conference home series of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Jaguars fell 9-0 and dropped a close 4-2 second meeting in extra innings.

 

The games moved Augusta to 3-19 overall and 0-4 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 20-12 on the year and 4-0 in the league. The Jags celebrated the annual cancer awareness games to support the Georgia Cancer Center.

 

Augusta hosts Columbus State on Sunday, March 24 for a 1:00 p.m. PBC double feature at Jaguar Field.

 

GAME 1

The Saints scored in their first four at bats and went on to win 9-0 in five innings. Flagler's Kyra Gipson (10-4) had a perfect game down to two outs in the fifth inning, but Augusta freshman Olivia Biles smacked a single to centerfield to break it open.

 

Freshman Katy Caldwell took over the pitcher's mound for junior Courtney Browne (0-3) in the first inning after the Saints scored three quick runs. Jags junior Jada Jackson made an appearance in the third inning and tossed 2.1 innings.

 

GAME 2

After trailing by one run heading into their fourth at bat, Augusta took a 2-1 lead when freshman Lauren Prescott hit a two-run home run to score sophomore Regan Norfleet.

 

Flagler tied the game at 2-2 with a lone run in the fifth. Jags junior Meredith McLendon start AU's final scheduled at bat with a single to left field, but the Jags were unable to get a run across and went into extra innings. Flagler scored two in the top of the eighth and went on to win 4-2.

 

Jaguar junior Morgan Hunter (2-9) pitched the entire game for Augusta and held the Saints to two earned runs on eight hits and struck out three. Senior Savannah Gabriel was 2-for-4 at the plate for Augusta and Prescott went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run.
