AU Walks Off GSW To Split Doubleheader

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team hosted the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes for a Peach Belt Conference series on Friday at Jaguar Field. Augusta walked it off against the Canes 2-1 in the first game and fell 4-2 in the second.

 

Augusta moved to 11-23 overall and 3-7 in the PBC, while GSW is now 16-21 and 5-5 in the league.

 

The Jags host six games next week. Emmanuel comes to AU on April 3 for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader, before PBC plays continues against Lander on April 7 (1&3PM) and USC Aiken on April 8 (2&4PM).

 

GAME 1

The first meeting was scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Canes carded a run to take a 1-0 lead. In their last scheduled at bat, the Jaguars hit two leadoff singles and scored on an infield error from GSW to tie the game. AU loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh inning and senior Kendyl Conner slapped a single to score sophomore Lydia Hausman for a 2-1 walk-off win.

 

Sophomore Morgan Hunter (8-11) got the win for Augusta on the mound, after she pitched all seven innings and held GSW to one run on five hits.

 

Seniors Auburn Balcorta, Carolyn Edwards, and Conner all had hits for AU, while freshman Cassie Blizzard recorded a hit in a pinch-hit effort.

 

GAME 2

AU led early and enjoyed a two-out rally in the first inning, when Hausman ripped an opposite-field single to score senior Lindsey Stokes. GSW scored the next run in top of the second to tie it a 1-1, before taking a 3-2 lead after the top of the fifth. Augusta gave up a pinch-hit homer in the sixth and went on to fall 4-2.

 

Jags sophomore slinger Courtney Browne (2-9) tossed five innings and struck out a pair, while allowing eight hits for three runs. Hunter tossed two innings in relief for AU and Edwards and Hausman each had two hits.
