AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team hosted the Lander Bearcats for a Peach Belt Conference series on Friday at Jaguar Field and dropped game one 2-0, before winning the second 5-2.

Augusta is now 13-25 overall and 4-8 in the Peach Belt, while Lander is now 20-16 and 4-8 in the league.

The Jags host the USC Aiken Pacers on Sunday, April 8 for a 2:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference series at Jaguar Field.

GAME 1

The contest was a pitcher's duel, with the teams combining for eight hits and just two runs. Augusta trailed early when Lander launched a solo home run to left field in the second inning. The Bearcats scored another in the seventh and survived the Jaguars for the game-one victory.

AU senior Carolyn Edwards hit a double with one out in the seventh inning, but the Jags couldn't compile the timely hits and fell by two runs. Edwards had all of Augusta's hits in a 2-for-3 day.

Sophomore Morgan Hunter (9-12) hurled all seven innings for the Jags and struck out two, while surrendering six hits for two runs.

GAME 2

Lander led early again in the second meeting, with a lone run in the first and second inning. Augusta senior Alexis Schlein hammered a double to centerfield in the bottom of the second to score sophomore Lydia Hausman, before freshman Regan Norfleet scored two on a single up the middle to give AU a 3-2 lead.

Lander loaded the bases with one out in the third, but AU shortstop Auburn Balcorta made two defensive stops to keep the lead intact. Freshman Bella Fernandez hit the second homer of her career with a line-drove bomb to centerfield in the sixth inning and Norfleet took home when she ran on a throw-down attempt to lift AU on top 5-2.

Sophomore Courtney Browne (3-9) was the starting pitcher for the Jags in game two and went five innings – striking out one and giving up two runs on eight hits. Hunter came in to pitch in the sixth and got the win for Augusta.
