Augusta Closes Out Claflin Twice

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team welcomed the Claflin Panthers for a midweek non-conference double feature at Jaguar Field and won 15-2 in game one, before scoring five runs in the six inning of the second game to win 6-5 and sweep the day.

 

AU has now won five of its last six games of the season and improved to 10-18, while Claflin moved to 13-19.

 

Augusta plays the North Georgia Nighthawks on Saturday, March 24 for a 1:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader in Dahlonega, Ga.

 

Game 1

Claflin carded the first run in its first at bat, but the Jaguars blew it open with four in the first inning, one in the sixth, and seven in the third to lead 12-1. The Jaguars went on to win 15-2 behind 12 hits.

 

Augusta was led offensively by its senior core of players. Senior Carolyn Edwards was 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs – highlighted by her second home run of the season. Senior Auburn Balcorta was also 3-for-3 with four runs and an RBI, senior Marni Greenstein carded three RBI on a homer, and senior Kendyl Conner was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run.

 

AU sophomore Morgan Hunter (7-8) sat Claflin down Claflin in order in the second, third, and fourth inning and got the win in four innings of work with five strikeouts. Sophomore Jada Jackson closed it out on the mound for Augusta in the fifth inning.

 

Game 2

The Panthers hit a solo home run in their first at bat to lead 1-0 after the opening inning for the second straight game. Claflin carded four more in the fifth to lead 5-1, after the Jags scored one in the fourth.

 

Augusta seniors Ashley Boyd blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Greenstein hit an RBI single to bring the Jaguars into a one-run game. With runners on first and second, senior Lindsey Stokes lined one to right field to score two as AU came back for a 6-5 win.

 

Hunter made back-to-back starts on the mound for the Jags and pitched four innings with six strikeouts, while allowing five hits for four runs (one earned). Sophomore Courtney Browne (2-7) got the win in three innings of relief work with four strikeouts. She held the Panthers to four hits.
