FLORENCE, S.C. – Augusta University softball head coach Melissa Brocato won her 500th game with the Jaguars on Saturday, March 10 with a 13-10 victory in game one of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Francis Marion University. AU dropped the second game 9-6 to split the conference-opening doubleheader.
Now in her 20th season, Brocato joined the Jags in 1999 for her first season as a collegiate coach and has remained in Augusta ever since. She now sports a 500-493-1 (.503) overall career record. For the all-time coaching history for the Jaguars click here
The 2018 Jaguars are now 5-15 overall and 1-1 in the league, while FMU moved to 12-12 on the year and 1-3 in the Peach Belt.
GAME 1
The Jags climbed back from a 7-0 deficit and got on the board in the top of the third when senior Carolyn Edwards ripped a two-run double to score Savannah Gabriel and Lindsey Stokes for a 7-2 game. Edwards made it 7-3 when she scored on a passed ball.
Sophomore Lydia Hausman homered in the top of the fourth inning on the first pitch of her at bat and Gabriel plated three with a double to left field later in the inning to tie the game at 7-7. The offense continued for AU in the fifth with a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single, before Hausman recorded her second triple of the season to score three more.
Augusta led 13-10 heading into the bottom of the seventh and held off the Pats for the win. Hausman was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Stokes and Edwards each had two hits with three RBI. Senior catcher Ashley Boyd added two hits for the Jags.
Sophomore slinger Jada Jackson (1-2) pitched four innings and got her first win as a Jaguar.
GAME 2
For the second straight game, FMU had a 7-0 lead after the second inning. AU senior Auburn Balcorta got the Jags on the board with a solo homer in the third, before Augusta scored four in the fourth to make it 7-5. FMU survived the Jags and won 9-6 to split the doubleheader.
Morgan Hunter (3-7) started for the Jags and Jackson came in to relieve her in the third inning. Hunter got the loss in 2.2 innings pitched – allowing seven hits for seven runs (six earned). Both Hunter and Jackson each recorded two strikeouts.
