DUNCAN, S.C. – The Augusta University softball team competed in the Mid-South Classic on Friday and Saturday afternoon with non-conference games against Carson-Newman, Lincoln Memorial, Barton, and Limestone at Tyger River Park. The Jaguars lost two close games on Friday, falling to Carson-Newman 4-2 and LMU 5-4 in extra innings. On Saturday, the Jags shut out Barton 4-0, before slipping 1-0 to Limestone.
The event featured Augusta, Barton, Carson-Newman, Converse, Georgia College, Limestone, Lincoln-Memorial, Mount Olive, Tiffin, and UNC Pembroke. Augusta (4-10) plays at Anderson University on Wednesday, Feb. 28 for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader in Anderson, S.C.

Augusta vs. Carson-Newman

Augusta trailed 4-0 by the fourth inning after a few errors. Jags senior Carolyn Edwards ripped a double to score junior Savannah Gabriel and freshman Regan Norfleet, cutting the score in half for a 4-2 game. C-N held off Augusta for a two-run victory.
AU sophomore slinger Courtney Browne tossed a complete game and allowed seven hits for four runs, but only one was earned. The Jags were held to two hits, with Edwards and senior Ashley Boyd representing the offense.
The C-N pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts in the game, while making three errors of their own in the field.
Augusta vs. Lincoln Memorial

The Jags started sophomore Morgan Hunter on the mound in game two of the tourney. Hunter pitched 4.1 innings and allowed six hits for three runs (one earned), before Browne and Jada Jackson each pitched 1.2 innings in relief.
Augusta had a 4-3 lead in extra innings, but LMU scored two in the bottom of the eighth to win and hand Jackson the loss.
Sophomore Lydia Hausman and senior Auburn Balcorta each had two hits for AU, while Hausman picked up three RBI highlighted by a triple.
Augusta vs. Barton College

The Jags struck first when Edwards scored senior Marni Greenstein for a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Edwards plated Greenstein again on an RBI hit in the top of the seventh, before freshman Cassie Blizzard blasted a two-run homer to give the Jags a 4-0 advantage.
Hunter held the Bulldogs scoreless in her complete game for the Jags. She struck out four and allowed five hits to will her team to a win. Greenstein went 2-for-2 for AU, while Edwards had a 3-for-4 day with two RBI and a run.
Augusta vs. Limestone
Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018
Limestone stayed ahead 1-0 all the way to the final inning and survived Augusta for the close win. In her fifth start, Browne pitched a complete game with three strikeouts – holding the Saints to four hits and one run.
The Saints held AU to one hit, with Blizzard recording it for Augusta. Courtney Smith for Limestone struck out 13 in her seven innings pitched.
