AU Falls To Newberry In Non-Conference Doubleheader

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Augusta University softball team had the bases loaded down a pair of runs in the last inning of game two at Newberry, but couldn't get a run and fell 2-0 after they lost 14-6 in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

 

The Jaguars (4-14) have lost nine games three runs or less this season

 

GAME 1

The Wolves (14-7) scored three in the first inning, but AU seniors Kendyl Connor and Lindsey Stoked blasted back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 3-3. Stokes and junior Savannah Gabriel each drove in runs in the fourth inning for Augusta. Newberry never slowed down and had 16 hits to win 14-6.

 

The Jaguars put up seven hits – led by Connor's 2-for-2 day with two RBI, two runs, and a walk. Stokes was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and senior Carolyn Edwards and freshmen Regan Norfleet and Bell Fernandez each had a hit for Augusta.

 

Newberry got to AU starter Courtney Browne (1-7) early with five hits for five runs, before the Jags' bullpen came in to the mix. Sophomore Jada Jackson struck out two in her three innings, but surrendered seven hits for five runs, before junior Alyssa Johnson made her first appearance of the season.

 

GAME 2

Game two was tightly contested down to the final inning. Newberry had a 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh, when the Jags loaded the bases off three singles from seniors Alexis Schlein, Auburn Balcorta, and Fernandez. The Wolves got a game-ending line drive to hold off Augusta.

 

The Jaguars outhit the Wolves 8-4, led by Fernandez and Schlein with two hits each.

 

In her ninth start and 10th appearance, AU sophomore slinger Morgan Hunter (3-6) hurled six innings and only allowed four hits for two runs, while only one was an earned run.
