Augusta Hosts Coker In 2018 Home Opener At Jaguar Field

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team hosted its first games of the 2018 season on Tuesday afternoon at Jaguar Field against Coker College. Coker took care of game one 12-3 and the second meeting 9-1 to sweep the non-conference doubleheader.

 

 

The Jaguars play at Carson-Newman for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 17 in Jefferson City, Tenn. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.

 

GAME 1

Augusta (1-5) had seven hits to Coker's eight and rookie leadoff Savannah Gabriel was 3-for-3 at the plate for the Jags. Gabriel recorded five hits in the doubleheader.

 

Seniors Carolyn Edwards and Lindsey Stokes each had a hit for AU, with Edwards adding two RBI on her first home run of the season. Junior Kelsea Hunter and senior Alexis Schlein each carded a hit for AU as well.

 

Coker (6-0) carded three runs on two hits to left field in the second inning and they added nine in a big top of the third. AU freshman Savannah Gabriel and senior Lindsey Stokes knocked two straight doubles off the centerfield wall in the bottom of the third and senior Carolyn Edwards blasted a long ball to make it 12-3. The Cobras cruised from there and won it in the fifth inning.

 

Pitcher Courtney Browne logged her second start and made her third appearance of the season for the Jags. Sophomore Jada Jackson tossed half an inning in the third, but Browne returned to the hill to close it out. Browne struck out three and allowed seven hits for 10 runs, but only six were earned as the defense made five errors behind her.

 

GAME 2

A two-run homer lifted Coker on top in the first inning, but Augusta cut the lead in half when Gabriel got her fourth straight hit and scored on a groundball. The Jags allowed another big inning when the Cobras carded five in the third inning, as they went on to win 9-1.

 

 

 

 

Head Coach Melissa Brocato when to sophomore right-hander Morgan Hunter on the mound to start game two for the Jaguars. Hunter tossed three innings and allowed six hits for eight runs (six earned), before Browne reentered and tossed two innings.

 

Gabriel had half of Augusta's four hits in game two, while Stokes the only run for AU.
