Augusta Splits Doubleheader With Carson-Newman On A Walk-Off Win

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team hosted the Carson-Newman Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Jaguar Field and snapped a seven game losing streak with a 6-5 walk-off win in the first game of the non-conference doubleheader. Augusta dropped the second 12-2 in five innings.

The Jaguars are 5-21 overall, while C-N moved to 1-7 on the 2017 season. Augusta visits Hickory, N.C., on Wednesday March 8 for the second time this season when they face Lenoir-Rhyne for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.

The Eagles etched across a game-tying run in the sixth inning of game one on a sacrifice fly, but the Jags loaded the bases for Erin Rozier to deliver a game-ending hit to deep centerfield for a 6-5 walk-off win.

In the third at bat of game one for the Eagles, Taylor Scott ripped a three-run homer to left field after the first two batters reached on two singles. Augusta answered in the bottom of the inning when junior Marni Greenstein doubled to left to score junior Lindsey Stokes.

Junior Carolyn Edwards tied the game later in the inning with her first homer of the season to make it 4-4. With the knotted until the fifth, Lydia Hausman and Greenstein traded places on two doubles for a 5-4 AU lead. C-N tied it, but Rozier came up big with the seventh inning hit.

Freshman Alyssa Johnson started her second game of the season, before freshman Morgan Hunter came in early and got the win. Hunter (2-5) pitched 6.2 innings and struck out eight Eagles in her 15th appearance. Greenstein went 2-3 with a pair of RBI, Rozier was 2-4 with an RBI, and Edwards' homer totaled three runs.

C-N's Alli Webster (7-4) logged 6.2 innings and allowed eight hits for six runs in the game-one loss. Abby Fiessinger, Kristen Toppel, and Taylor Scott each had two hits.

The Eagles started game two the same way they did the first, with a multi-run homer in the first inning. Down 2-0 in the third, Augusta tied the game with Stokes and sophomore Kelsea Hunter each scoring a run on singles to center field.

C-N sent their third homer of the day over the left-field wall to snag a 4-2 advantage in the fifth inning and they exploded for 10 runs in the fifth to win it early.

Senior righty Kristen Mills (1-11) logged four innings on the mound for Augusta and gave up eight hits for eight runs. Sophomore Emily Hittinger saw action in her eighth appearance.
