Diamond Jags Take One From Converse To Open Mid-South Classic

DUNCAN, S.C. – The Augusta University softball team started competition on Saturday at the Mid-South Classic – a non-conference tournament at Tyger River Stadium and outlasted Converse 4-2 in game one before dropping a 9-1 game to Wingate.

The Jaguars (4-14) return to tourney action on Sunday, Feb. 26 to face Lenoir-Rhyne (12:00 p.m.) and Limestone (2:00 p.m.).

Augusta squared off against the Converse Valkyries (0-9) in game one to open the event and clawed back from a first-inning deficit to win 4-2 on a pair of runs in the seventh inning.

Freshman Morgan Hunter (1-2) grabbed the first win of her collegiate career – tossing a complete game with five strikeouts for AU. Hunter only allowed four hits for two runs in her third start of the year.

With the game tied 2-2 in the seventh, Augusta used two singles from junior Lindsey Stokes and freshman Courtney Browne to steal a 4-2 lead for the win. Stokes went 2-4 with a run and RBI and junior Marni Greenstein carded two hits with a triple.

The Jaguars met Wingate for the third time in two days and the Bulldogs won 9-1.

After Wingate scored first, the Jags tied the game off a double from junior Carolyn Edwards that plated sophomore Kelsea Hunter. It was the only run for the Jags as the Bulldogs outhit AU 7-1.

Starting game two on the mound for the Jaguars was senior Kristen Mills (1-6). Mills started her ninth game of the season and pitched 4.0 innings with three strikeouts.
