Diamond Jags Open Play In Non-Conference North Carolina Tourney
HICKORY, N.C. – The Augusta University softball team started played in its first non-conference tournament of the year on Friday afternoon and dropped a game to Lenoir-Rhyne and one to Pfeiffer.
 

Day one was hosted by the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in Hickory, N.C., at Bears Field. LRU took an 11-0 lead after the fourth inning of game one, but the Jags (3-9) managed a pair of runs in the fifth on Lydia Hausman and Morgan Hunter's hits. The Bears won game one on their home field 11-3, before Pfeiffer downed Augusta 10-5 in the second matchup.

 

Hausman was 2-3 at the plate with an RBI for Augusta, freshman Morgan Hunter was 2-2 with an RBI, and junior Marni Greenstein had an RBI on one hit.

 

On the mound for AU, senior Kristen Mills made the start before Emily Hittinger and M. Hunter came on in relief. Mills (1-4) only gave up two hits and allowed four runs (two earned). Hittinger pitched 2.1 innings and gave up seven hits for six runs and M. Hunter held the Bears to one run on three hits. The Jaguar defense committed four errors in the meeting with LRU.

 

Facing Pfeiffer in game two of the day, the Jags jumped put up four runs in the second inning thanks to a double from junior Carolyn Edwards and a single from Hausman. Pfeiffer responded with three runs in the bottom half of the second and added seven more more for a 10-5 final.

 

The Jaguars used four of their five pitchers on the roster in game two. Freshman Courtney Browne made her fifth start of the season and pitched 3.0 innings to allow three runs on one hit. Hittinger (1-1) got the loss in 1.1 innings of work.

 

Augusta faces Lenoir-Rhyne (2pm) and Pfeiffer (4pm) on Friday, Feb. 17 in Hickory, N.C. On Saturday, Feb. 18, AU plays Catawba (1pm) and Pfeiffer (3pm) in Salisbury, N.C.
