Softball Starts Season With Non-Conference Split

AUGUSTA, Ga. – In their first games of the 2017 season, the Augusta University softball team hosts the Catawba Indians and the West Georgia Wolves on Saturday. The Augusta Jaguars took down Catawba 5-3 in game one and fell 8-1 to West Georgia.

 

The Jags (1-1) also hosted a neutral site game between the West Georgia Wolves and the Catawba Indians at noon and the Wolves prevailed.

 

Augusta opened the new season by scoring two runs in their first at bat against the Catawba Indians. AU drew three walks in the first inning and a single and fielder's choice plated Lindsey Stokes and Alex Head for a 2-0 lead.

 

Edwards scored Mills on a single in the fourth inning and the Jags made it 4-0 when Marni Greenstein drew a bases-loaded walk. The Jags won 5-2 after adding a lone run in the fifth.

 

Sophomore Alex Head went 2-3 with a run to highlight the Jags offense. AU outhit Catawba 6-5 on the day to open the New Year with a win. Senior Kristen Mills got the win on the mound in a full 7.0 innings of work. She struck out two and gave up five hits for three runs.

 

Stokes and Head each had a hit in game two, as did Kelsea Hunter and Lydia Hausman. AU put up four hits to UWG's 10 on the day.

 

Morgan Hunter made the start on the mound for the Jags and pitched a complete game giving up 10 hits for eight runs (six earned).

 

Augusta returns to Jaguar Field on Sunday, Feb. 5 to face Catawba again at 10:00 a.m. and West Georgia at 3:00 p.m. to wrap up the non-conference weekend.
