ASU, GC Swap Shutouts

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Emily Headrick and Heather Sexton tag-teamed a game one shutout and allowed just three hits for a 3-0 victory, but Georgia College (19-13, 6-2 PBC) returned the favor in a 6-0 game two to salvage a split with Augusta State (23-7, 6-2 PBC) Saturday at Jaguar Field on Parents' Day.

Headrick (11-2) stranded two runners in scoring position in the first and another in the fourth, striking out six to nix the Bobcat attack through five, and Sexton left two on the basepaths in the sixth and tossed a 1-2-3 seventh for her second save of the season.

The Jaguars got all three runs in the third off Bobcat hurler Sabrina Chandler (5-4). Two errors allowed Renae Kimbell and Kacee Camp to reach base, and a Molly Walton bunt single loaded the bases. Kristen Jones followed with a single down the right field line, bringing both Kimbell and Camp home, and Jessica Thornton's bunt single squeezed Walton home for the final margin.

Jones led the Jaguars with two hits and two RBI, while Thornton went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.

In game two, Georgia College's Haley Burnett (6-4) kept ASU off-balance the entire game, going the full seven innings for a three-hitter of her own.

The Jaguars loaded the bases in the fourth with two outs, but 6-4 putout ended the only serious threat of the game.

GC put two runs on the board in the first, second, and fifth innings, using a sacrifice fly and throwing error to take the initial lead and coast from there.

Heather Hughes took the loss to fall to 7-2 on the season, giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out two and walking three.

Kelsea Martin paced the Bobcat attack with three hits in the second game, driving in a run. Kimbell, Thornton, and Laura Brown notched the only Jaguar hits in the game.

Augusta State is back in action Saturday, March 19 when Carson-Newman visits for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
