ASU Wins Two On Opening Day

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Augusta State kicked off its 2012 season Friday afternoon with a pair of victories over West Alabama and Lenoir-Rhyne on the first day of the Hughston Sports Clinic Classic.

Scoreless until the fifth in the opener, the Jags plated four runs in the final three innings. Five ASU players each had a hit, with seniors Jessica Thornton and Renae Kimbell and freshman Hannah Vaughn each collecting an RBI.

ASU senior Emily Headrick (1-0) tossed a complete-game two-hitter, allowing an earned run with three strikeouts and four walks.

In the second game, the Jags got a superior effort from senior hurler Heather Hughes and blanked ninth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne 3-0.

Hughes (1-0) went the distance, giving up seven hits in 7.0 innings while striking out two without a walk.

ASU senior shortstop Kacee Camp went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Molly Walton and Laura Brown each drove in a run.

The Jags face West Alabama and Columbus State on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
