Augusta Wins Eye Opener Invitational To Start Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Augusta University men's cross country team began the 2017 season on Friday, Sept. 1 at the Eye Opener Invitational, hosted by USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C., and finished in first place.

 

 

Hosted by the USC Upstate Spartans at Milliken Research Park, the 2017 Eye Opener featured a men's 8K, followed by the women's 5K. Augusta owned the race in first place, Anderson took second, Emmanuel third, Limestone fourth, and Lander fifth. USCU, Furman, Wofford, and Presbyterian competed in the Division I race.

 

Jags junior Daniel Broadhead delivered another top-10 finish and placed eighth in 26:01.01 to lead the team. Last season, Broadhead placed top 10 in five of six races. AU freshmen duo Jacob Poston and Hunter Kimball stayed together, with Poston posting a 12th place finish (26:30.9) and Kimball 13th (26:38.1).

 

Augusta senior Josh Thompson and rookie Merrick Rizzo finished together as well, with Thompson placing 16th in 26:53.7 and Rizzo 17th in 27:00.9. Noah Hulett was close behind in 23rd (27:35.8), David Perez-Santiago carded 37th (28:45.9), and Chandler Kennedy 44th (29:03.3).

 

Augusta hosts the ninth annual Jaguar Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9. Augusta will race a men's 8K and women's 5K for the second year in a tow at the Jackson Cross Country Course and Trails on the Flowing Wells Campus of Episcopal Day School.
