ASU Men's Cross Country Honored

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta State men's cross country program was recently recognized with a national award by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, according to a recent release from the USTFCCCA headquarters in New Orleans, La.

ASU was a recipient of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Award, which was presented to a total of 68 institutions representing 19 conferences. The Jaguars were one of five Peach Belt Conference programs to receive the honor, joining Clayton State, Columbus State and Georgia College.

Six of the top 10 finishing teams at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status. Of the 24 teams that participated in the national final, 12 of those earned All-Academic status. In addition, six of eight NCAA regional championship teams earned All-Academic honors.

Western State, coached by Jennifer Michel, tallied a 3.37 cumulative team GPA through the latest semester. The Mountaineers finished as the national runners-up at the NCAA D-II Cross Country Championships this fall and were topped only by rival Adams State. The squad also finished second at the NCAA Central Region Championships and the RMAC Championships.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have compiled a score (finished at least five runners) at their respective NCAA regional championship.
