Jags Tennis Hosts Back-To-Back Matches Feb. 1-2 To Start New Season

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's and men's tennis teams open play in the 2019 season this Friday, Feb. 1 with a non-conference dual match against the Golden State Bulls at Newman Tennis Center.

 

The Jaguars host back-to-back out of league matches Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 at NTC. After the season-opening match against JSCU at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, Augusta hosts Coker College at 1:00 p.m. on saturday. Both Augusta squads play the same schedule in 2019.

 

Entering his 21st season as the head coach of both programs, Michael McGrath is set to oversee both squads with a strong cast of returners and few new faces. McGrath has a 253-203 (.555) record with the Augusta men since his first season in 1998-99. He holds a 231-204 (.531) record with the women's squad and a combined 484-407 (.543) mark.  

 

The 2019 Augusta women's roster features seven returners from last season. Junior quartet Marie Cantenot, Merye Gobernate, Alejandra Gonzalez Arranz, Eva Miralles-Miro and sophomore trio Ana Faria, Flaminia Valci and Maria Alice Vieira are all back for the Jags.

 

The Augusta men's team returns four and brought in six freshman. Seniors Patrick Oliveira and Joao Ferreira headline the veterans on the team, with Oliveira entering the season ranked No. 30 in the nation, No. 9 in the region, and a preseason All-Conference selection. Jags junior Gaspard Mathieu and sophomore Martin Hurtado return, while freshmen Lucas Bolle, Kevin Corenstein, Matheus Fortunato Mendes, Alvaro Quereda, Ricard Rubio, and Gabriel Vallim will debut with Augusta.
