AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's tennis team lifted the lid on the 2018 season and won a 9-0 non-conference match over Johnson C. Smith at Newman Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
In year 20 with the Jaguars, head coach Michael McGrath led the Jaguars to a flawless victory in the team's first on-court action of the new season.
Ranked No. 10 in the nation for Division II men's singles, junior Patrick Oliveira won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while freshman Alan Vilaro shined 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 singles for his first collegiate match. Sophomore Gaspard Mathieu, senior Moritz Gehlhaus, and freshman Martin Hurtado all won without dropping a set and senior Gabriel Dos Santos won 6-1, 6-0 in the final singles slot.
Augusta dominated doubles play as well and swept JSCU to seal a 9-0 win.
Augusta heads to Florence, S.C., this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 3-4 to play in the City of Florence College Tennis Invitational at Florence Tennis Center.
