AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's tennis squad returns seven student-athletes from last season and signed new freshman Odyr Cruz for the 2016-17 season that officially begins with the spring season in February.
Entering his 19th season as head coach, Michael McGrath signed one new athlete in Odyr Cruz from Salvador, Brazil. Cruz attended Colégio Anglo Brasileiro, a private school in Salvador, Brazil for six years and graduated in 2011.
Cruz joins six other Brazilian teammates on the squad, while junior German-native Moritz Gehlhaus returns for his junior year as well.
Last season in 2015-16, Augusta was nationally ranked No. 20 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and ranked sixth in the NCAA Southeast Region. The Jags went 11-2 at home in Newman Tennis Center led by returning sophomore Patrick Oliveira – who was ranked No. 11 in nation and No. 3 in region.
Sophomore Joao Ferreira was also ranked in the region with a No. 20 listing, while four Jaguars earned Peach Belt Conference All-Academic honors.
Augusta officially begins the new season in February 2017.
