AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta men's tennis freshman Moritz Gehlhaus has been named the 2015 Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, while senior Romain Ferreira earned second-team All-Conference honors. The All-Conference teams were announced Friday night at the tennis banquet in Florence, S.C., on the eve of the PBC Tournament.
Moritz Gehlhaus was named co-freshman of the year with Georgia College's Pedro Ecenarro Del Rio. Moritz Gehlhaus has lost only three dual matches in his first collegiate season. From Landsberg am Lech, Germany, the freshman played matches in the top four slots, but was most effective at No. 4 singles where he was 10-1 this spring. He was 6-3 against conference opponents and has the best record at No. 4 singles of any player in the PBC. He becomes the first Jaguar to be named a PBC Freshman of the Year.
Romain Ferreira went 9-4 overall this season in singles competition. The senior tallied an 8-4 mark in the No. 1 singles slot and ended his final regular-season play on a 6-4 run. In doubles competition, Ferreira was 4-4 with Gehlhaus in the No. 1 slot, went 1-0 with Gustav Anderson, and was 1-3 with Romain Brunie at no. 1 doubles.
Armstrong's Fernando Bogajo and Flagler's Jose Martinez shared Co-Players of the Year awards, while Lander's Brett Simpson was named the 2015 PBC Coach of the Year.
