AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 23 nationally-ranked Jaguars couldn't overcome No. 4 Armstrong Atlantic State to drop a 6-3 Peach Belt Conference match Tuesday at Newman Tennis Center.
The Jaguars moved to 11-6 overall and 2-6 in the Peach Belt, while the Armstrong Pirates moved to 13-4 and 6-0 in the league. After the Pirates won both opening doubles matches, Joao Gabriel Freitas and Gustav Anderson were paired together in number three doubles for the Jaguars. The Jags duo fought hard, but dropped the match 9-8 in a close battle just before singles play.
Moritz Gehlhaus continued his impressive freshman season and won the number four singles match in three sets. Gabriel Freitas defeated Marek Pesicka in number five singles, and Arthur Andrade shined in the sixth slot in another three-set victory for the Jags.
GRU spilt the same amount of wins with Armstrong in doubles play, but a sweep in doubles gave the Pirates the edge.
The Jaguars play at Lander for a Peach Belt Conference match this Thursday, April 2 in Greenwood, S.C., for a 2:00 p.m. start.
