Men’s Tennis Welcomes Five New Players, Women Add Two

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The GRU Augusta men's tennis team has added five new freshman players in hopes of improving on it's already stellar record of 21-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play last season. There will be five returners and five new players for the men's team, while the women have added two new faces for 2014-15.

The new players joining the Jaguar men are 5-8 freshman Caio Camara, who comes from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and plans to major in business management. Jose Cobo a 6-0 freshman from Guayquil, Ecuador joins GRU and has plans to major in marketing, while Moritz Gehlhaus, a 6-6 freshman from Bavaria, Germany, will study business management.

Freshmen Braxton Hain a 6-0 native from right here in Augusta, Ga., and Thomas Sevel a 6-6 rookie from Saint Raphael, France round out the new faces for GRU men's tennis team. Romain Ferreira and Romain Brunie, the only seniors on the team, will look to provide some experienced leadership for the newcomers.

The women's tennis team hopes to improve on last year's solid record of 11-9 overall and 4-6 in conference play. The women have five returning players and two newcomers.

Sophomore transfer Monica Gonzalez comes in at 5-8 and hails from Barcelona, Spain. She is majoring in marketing and true freshman Amelia Pinoargote comes in at 5-6 from Guayquil, Ecuador. The women are loaded with veteran talent as four of the five returners are upper classmen and will look to lead the way for the Jags.

Head Coach Michael McGrath is one of the longest-tenured coaches in GRU athletics - starting his 17th season with both the men's and women's tennis teams.

Recently the Jaguar men's tennis team wrapped up their fall season and won 24 of their 34 matches at the Georgia College Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Milledgeville, Ga., on Oct. 12.

The Jaguar women's tennis team wrapped up a two-day fall tournament on Sunday, Oct. 5 at the 2014 Georgia College Invitational. GRU Augusta competed against Peach Belt Conference opponents Georgia College and UNC Pembroke and non-conference Florida Institute of Technology.
